...upper management and the CEO of the hospital are making $500,000 a year with million-dollar bonuses for "balancing the budget" and meanwhile in the ER they're only staffing 7 nurses when we need 15, they're turning away per diem nurses who want work, and we are completely out of gauze and rape kits.
Seriously. We had to send a security guard to the county hospital to pick up a freaking RAPE KIT.
I'm embarrassed to work here.

I got nuttin'. I'm speechless to that.
Sad. Very sad.
Sounds like a typical US company. We on the bottom are scraping to get by, while those on the top are rolling in their bonuses. Good luck finding someplace different.
We have the same issues in our hospital right now. NO Per Diems, Pay cuts, shift cuts, but they can rip out "old" landscaping and put in all new stuff . . . that looks like the old stuff BTW. I agree it's embarrassing!
And this is what some people want to introduce to the UK. The NHS can be bad. Not that bad.
How do you even operate without gauze?!? Isn't gauze used for just about everything?!?!?!
ugh, that's pretty bad....
That sucks! I know how that feels. I had to leave my job for that reason. 3-10% paycuts, theyre building a new facility, AND installing new phones in every room. WTF!
Yikes!
I had a few moments like that at my current job. It's what made me decide to seek employment elsewhere after graduation.
Since your mom was Canadian, you know that you are Canadian by birthright, right?
You might be able to find a job up here....and the pay can be quite good. I actually like work up here.
Here are some of the wages of RNs (not management)in BC

Top wage is $198K and I am pt and cleared $75K plus great benefits.
and that is exactly why I left the hospital I used to work at.
I didn`t see this post before commenting on "bullshit".
Yes they are spending money foolishly. Sorry about my other comment.
I know the bit very well, about being turned away and wanting to work. Took me frickin' seven earth-months to find work as a grad RN and I had to leave NY and come to RI to find work. Hey, but all those places that turned me away? They're balancing their budget!
How about a CEO whose pay increased from $1.5million to $3million while nurses received a 1% raise and medical copay increased 2% of salary thereby cutting our pay? PAs haven't received a raise in years. They are quitting in droves. I could deal with all the shit when I was getting paid enough in this inner city trauma center but I don't know how much longer I can take it if they continue to cut our pay.
