Sorry I've been away so long!
I'm busy with school, of course...only a few more classes and I'm done!
Our other dog passed away on Monday--she was only six years old and apparently died in her sleep. We miss her so much. Of course we'll get a new dog, but we're in the process of buying and selling houses/apartments, and don't want to bring a dog into the chaos of moving. Once we're settled, we'll start looking. In the meantime, Hubs and I are consoling ourselves with our "newer" dog, who we got this past February to replace our old guy, who died in January.
And, things at work have become intolerable--so bad that staffing is blatantly unsafe, management chooses to side with people who are a danger to other patients and staff instead of with the nurses and doctors who are trying to protect those people from danger (it's SO bad, but I can't write more about it...yet), and I'm looking for a new job. The clipboard nurse from upstairs who hates me? She's now in charge of the ED. Time to go. I'm using up my vacation time and getting resumes out there, and in the meantime, I'm keeping my head down at work and just doing everything by the book. I'm getting my certifications in order (TNCC, ENPC, CEN) so I'll be more attractive to a new employer.
I'm even debating ultimately getting out of emergency nursing when I eventually move on to my Masters degree. Suggestions, anyone?
More soon!
xoxo

Wow! Best of luck!
I will never understand the process with management and how they pick who they do. I secretly think they are all blowing each other and that's how they get their jobs.
Good luck with your job search. When ya gotta go, ya gotta go. You always know when it's time for a new opportunity.
Currently, I have certifications in ACLS, PALS, TNCC, ENPC, BLS, ABLS (Advanced Burn Life Support), NRP, BLS instructor, and I am back in school for my BSN now too... best of luck to you...and my hospital is getting bad too!
It's time to unionize- seriously.
Based on my experience as a manager, the process by which leaders are selected, especially for promotions, is nauseating and disgusting at best. For instance, if there is a budget crisis, they may exclude qualified candidates and only talk to under or un-qualified candidates so they can lowball the salary.
Just try another hospital. With your bajillion years of experience, you shouldn't have trouble. Of course, sometimes applications of qualified people get lost in a sea of new-grad applications, so make sure you follow applications up by calling HR and asking to speak to the nurse recruiter. Identify yourself as an experienced emergency nurse who would like to discuss available positions. Better yet, if you can figure out who the hiring manager is for a particular job (maybe you know someone who works at that hospital and they can ask?), just email 'em after submitting your application.
As someone who hired nurses, I was always excited to interview someone with tons of experience.
Thanks, Nurse K!
I've already heard back from one hospital and have an interview this week. I'm excited! The hospital is a little farther away than I'd like, but I'm willing to commute if it means being in the situation I want.
I'll keep you updated!
Just avoid doing too much trash-talking of the previous employer...Why do you want to leave? Just be like, "I'm looking for a change." A lot of times, this keeps the follow-up questions to a minimum.
If they want more info, say something like, "Despite having a good work ethic and being used to simultaneously prioritizing many duties, I've been finding it increasingly hard to give the excellent care that I want to give in my current role due to changes in the staffing model...I want to be able to have some energy left at the end of the day to pursue a Master's degree in the future."
Losing a loved pet hurts. Hope you're feeling better.
Yeah, I'm in the middle of moving/finding a new apartment...except I'm trying to do it across two time zones. Bleh.
Best of luck on the job search. You'll do well no matter where you go.
If you are looking for a new pet, please check out Stray Rescue! That's where I got my beloved Bruno Baxter, and he may be the best dog EVER. You can foster, too, if you prefer. Here's the link!

Dee was my girl. Had her a year or so before GGRN and I got together. She wasn't even 7 and we thought she'd make it to 17 lolling about in the kiddie pool we were gonna get for her in the new backyard. She was healthy as a horse, or a healthy dog. And as a Carolina Dog mix with ancient genetics we figured she was rock solid. But she just went. Fucking fuck. I loved that dog. Thanks for the tip Rothase. We always get rescues. I'm thinking Greyhound, after we get settled into the new joint. But, who knows...
Fuck.

If you like school, I suggest informatics. To the person who doesn't understand "how" management is picked - read The Peter Principle. I think you can pick it up on Amazon for $.01
