Our Smokin' President Elect!

Apparently our soon-to-be-leader is still smoking cigarettes! The Happy Hospitalist is having a debate on whether or not it's our business.

Personally, I don't understand why any intelligent person would smoke. I've never smoked cigarettes; I think they're gross. I've tried them, but ew. Blech. My mother, a nurse, smoked for years (and still does, despite having stage IV colon cancer). My sister smoked too, and watching her quit made me realize how difficult it is. When she was quitting, she would call me from payphones crying about how she couldn't believe she could never have a "smoky treat" again. It was very hard for her, and she ultimately had to use Zyban to quit. She stopped and has never smoked since. Smoking causes so many health problems, it smells, and it's a disgusting habit. I don't understand WHY anyone would ever start in this day and age.

THAT SAID: It's none of our business if the President smokes. And, I know from experience: Haranguing him to quit will not work. He's been under a lot of stress lately. He knows it's bad to smoke. He'll quit on his own.

Let's just hope he'll go outside the White House to light up!

I'm with you--do intelligent people really still smoke? When I came back to school I was blown away by the number of people puffing it up. I posted about it here: Puff.

Of course Obama smokes.

The key word in your post is "intelligent."

Sorry.

Even though I went through all the "bad things drugs do to you" classes for my psych degree, they never really went over nicotine withdrawal adequately.

I quit my pack a day habit cold turkey. The first 24 hours were ok, the next three days I spent kind of curled up in a ball trying to get my fingers and back and legs to uncramp. My teeth hurt for months. It's taken about four years of not smoking for me to be able to be around others smoking and not have the impulse to knock them over and take *my* cigarette.

I won't ever smoke again because I don't want to go through THAT again.

GuitarGirl, I wonder if your mom's cigs caused her colon cancer. If so, I think she was doing it wrong. :)

Anyhoo, I don't think cig smoking is about "smart" vs. "stupid". I think more people start because they lack confidence, and simply want to fit in with the crowd, so they start smoking.

BTW, I do not smoke and never have. I can't even go into bars because it bothers me so much.

I agree with you that it's none of anyone's business if Mr. Obama smokes. I smoke cigars and it's my business not anyone elses if I do.
Still, it ironic that the party which he now leads is the nanny state party that wants to harangue people about not smoking.

Irony.

I grew up in a world where 85% of adults smoked. My parents both smoked. I LOVE the smell of cigarette smoke!

I smoke 3-4 packs of cigarettes a day -- and my IQ is 146. I think that smoking is an emotional crutch for me. I have no desire to quit, but have tried a couple of times for other people's sake. Obviously I didn't kick the habit, because it's like any other addiction, the person has to REALLY want to quit and I didn't.

Obama's smoking just makes him all the more human... and this is America, where he still has the right to his own choice on the matter, right?!?

I watched Mr. Obama last Sunday morn on Meet the Press. What a joke this guy is. He is the consummate politician. He could not even answer a question about his cigarette smoking without side-stepping his way around it. All he was asked is if he has stopped smoking. He could not give Tom Brokaw a straight answer. Pitiful. Then when Obama said our auto companies should model themselves after the Japanese companies who he said are doing very well compared to US companies he even got that wrong. Toyota sales down 32%, Honda down 31%, almost as bad a US car companies. He also said our car companies have "been in denial for the last 30 yrs". Not true. Who sold more and better cars than the Japanese in the 90's? WE did! Get the book called "Comeback" It's all about it. It's about how we learned to compete with and beat the Japanese at their own game. We even got them to start building SUV's and full size trucks in order to keep up with us!
He said our companies have to bear the burden in bad times and share the wealth in good. He said our US companies don't do that. Baloney again! For example, in the 90's I remember Ford gave as a Xmas bonus to each and every employee: one year's salary and a home computer!!!!! Nice yeah? Yeah! US car companies have always been (too) generous with benefits and bonuses including car discounts for employees.
Obama sounded worse than his responses in the Saddleback Church interviews (when I made my desision to vote for McCain who gave honest answers) and he has yet to move into the White House. Heck, at times he sounded as naive as Palin.

Hey Obama, you should read more and do some homework. Oh and stop smoking and be honest about it.
...and Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State? I'd be less upset it you appointed Madonna!

It's gonna be a looooong four years.

Of course, Obama is dumb as hell, Trauma Junkie, because he doesn't share your value system. Only idiots get degrees from Harvard. Everyone knows that. Save that trash for ER Nursey, shit.
